Police teams were dispatched to seven suspected areas in Nam Yuen, Na Chaluai, Sirindhorn and Khong Chiam districts to search for Mr Sisouk but found no trace of the man.
Mr Sisouk is believed to be the leader of some 60 armed rebels who briefly took over Lao government offices in Vang Tao village, opposite Ubon Ratchathani’s Chong Mek border pass in Sirindhorn district early on Monday.
His brother, who lives in the United States, said Mr Sisouk obtained money from Lao exiles in the US, Canada and Europe to buy weapons and supplies.
Donations came from “Lao people who don’t like what the government is doing in Laos”, the brother said.
Mr Sisouk told his recruits he led the resistance in the name of Prince Sauryavong Savang, the patriarch of the Lao royal family and the brother of Laos’ last king, who died in a communist re-education camp two decades ago.
US Embassy officials in Bangkok, meanwhile, has informally asked Thailand for information on Sisouk to check whether he held US citizenship and had a residence in the US. A computer search of the US immigration list failed to locate his name.
“If we have credible information that links Monday’s attack to a group in the US, we would consider the information seriously and take appropriate action in accordance with US laws,” an embassy spokesman said.
