With two seconds on the shot clock and the Nuggets nursing a two-point lead, Denver’s Andre Miller put up a shot that hit the underside of the rim. Rookie Carmelo Anthony grabbed the rebound, but a whistle blew indicating a shot-clock violation.

The referees ruled it an inadvertent whistle and Lakers center Shaquille O’Neal won the ensuing jump ball with 27 seconds left. Luke Walton penetrated and passed to Kareem Rush, who hit a 3-pointer for a 112-111 lead.

On Thursday, NBA senior vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson issued a statement, admitting to a mistake by the officiating crew, particularly referee Michael Henderson.

“This was an unfortunate call at a highly critical point in the game and we very much regret the error,” Jackson stated.

“Call the ATF because they robbed us tonight,” Carmelo Anthony said. “We played so hard. I had it in my hand before they blew the whistle.”
