Local news via COX: (San Diego, CA) — Two people were killed just before noon (on 01-20-2006, Friday) when their 1972 Volkswagen Beetle swerved off a National City freeway bridge and crashed onto the roadway 70 feet below. A male passenger was ejected from the car and thrown onto the roadway on Plaza Boulevard beneath the northbound lanes of Interstate 805. The female driver was trapped in the wreckage. Both were dead at the scene. Police shut down traffic lanes in the area causing backups for about two hours. CHP officers are investigating to determine the cause of the accident.

I had to detour around this as I was getting off the 805-S going home from SDSU. I always wondered what happened there because I wasn’t able to see the wreckage… only tons of people standing under the bridge on the sidewalk.
