As you may have heard, there has been an outbreak of mumps in Iowa, with 975 cases reported there as of last week. There have been several hundred more cases, mostly in other Midwest states. There have been only five cases in California this year, and none appear to be linked to the Midwest cases.
However, there is a concern that this epidemic could spread to our state. It can spread by sharing drinking glasses, kissing, sneezing and coughing. People are infectious for 2-7 days before feeling sick and for about 9 days after becoming ill. The average time from exposure to the development of symptoms is 16-18 days. Symptoms can be non-specific, including muscle aches, decreased appetite, headache and low grade fever.
