Heroes episode: “Company Man” recap
February 27, 2007 | Category: blog
Ted and Matt hold Mr. Bennett, Claire, Claire’s mom and brother hostage in their own home while they Ted and Matt try to pry answers out of Mr. Bennett.
Matt starts to read Claire’s mind as she expresses her anger towards Mr. Bennett (saying it’s all his fault, etc.) which leads to a flashback sequence.
In it, Mr. Bennett has just been hired as a Regional District Manager for Primatech Paper (17 years ago) … a cover for a sort of organization that captures ‘them’. His boss introduces him to his partner, who is one of ‘them’, and he materializes as Claude (the Invisible Man who was helping Peter Petrelli).
More bickering between everyone ensues until Matt takes Claire aside into the office room so he can read her mind. We’re treated to another of Mr. Bennett’s flashbacks (14 years ago) which shows him on a rooftop talking with Claude.
They are watching their boss talk with Hiro’s father, who is holding Claire as a baby. Mr. Bennett goes out there as his boss and Claude excuse themselves and is basically ordered to adopt Claire until she manifests - then he will hand her over to them.
He leaves with Hiro, only a small boy (playing a GameBoy-like system haha) at the time. Claude comes out and congratulates Mr. Bennett, saying “Happy Fathers Day!”
Back in the Bennett household… HRG attempts to leap forward and get his revolver but his plan backfires and now Ted has the gun and is going nuts. He is about to shoot his wife when Matt shoots Claire instead (on the behalf of HRG’s thoughts).
Following his queue, Matt and HRG go upstairs and lay Claire down where Matt sees for himself how she can heal herself. They come up with a plan to get the information Ted wants and neutralize the situation before anyone else gets hurt.
The only problem is that Ted wants to stay behind with the family just in case HRG doesn’t own up to his part of the deal, so Matt goes with HRG to the Primatech Paper office.
Flashback sequence… HRG confesses to his boss that his wife is suspecting something because she saw his gun. He complains that the baby (Claire) was crying all night and that he is tired and wasn’t being careful with his judgment.
His boss calls him stupid and threatens the safety of his family… but mentions they found this mute boy in Haiti who can wipe away peoples memories.
Thus, the introduction of the Haitian (and the 1st time Mrs. Bennett’s mind being wiped).
HRG readies the tranquilizer gun that is prepared for Ted - he explains to Matt that he is the only one he can trust right now and assures him what they’re doing is the right thing.
The Haitian appears and HRG confronts him - demanding to know how he is talking to Claire and why her mind wasn’t wiped. The Haitian actually speaks and softly answers that a higher authority ordered him (HRG’s family).
Oooh, sentimental.
Flashback sequence… HRG tells Claude they’re going on an infiltration mission and Claude tells him he is a horrible liar. Claude knows they told him to kill him. They both get out of the car and stop on a bridge.
They argue about the mission of their organization, Claude is to be killed because he is harboring (or hiding) ‘them’. Claude says that he can’t go on killing people like him and what they’re doing isn’t the right thing.
HRG shoots him and he appears to be dying when he starts turning invisible and falls over the bridge.
(This flashback confirms a previous episode where HRG is talking with Isaac and Isaac thinks that Peter is invisible somehow - to which HRG says “an old friend I thought was dead.” It also explains why Claude has the double lines mark on his neck)
Back in the homestead, Claire attempts a daring rescue, unfortunately, her brother is the only one that gets away. HRG and Matt finally come back with the evidence that Ted wanted… whilst the Haitian lets Claire and her mother free.
During the nice little chat, HRG’s boss sneaks in the back door and says, “I’m sorry too…” and shoots at the 3 and hits Ted. Ted starts going nuclear and the house is on fire.
Claire eventually gets the tranquilizer and subdues him and the Bennett family meet and hug outside where HRG’s boss stands on smiling at him.
His boss says something about how the Haitian fled and asks for Claire to be delivered to them. Ted and Matt are both undergoing tests (appears once they are done with Ted he is to be killed).
In Matt’s testing room, HRG talks about the female accompanying them, saying she has ‘great potential’.

HRG is now driving with Claire on the same path he once drove with Claude to. This time, he says it’s the only way… and instructs the Haitian to take Claire as far away as possible, and has him shoot him in the gut, then erase his memory.
I knew he was a good guy after all…
So this was a very interesting episode as we learn the hierarchy of Primatech Paper (well, what’s really behind it anyway). It appears that Hiro’s father is on top, followed by HRG’s boss (never caught his name).
During the first few minutes of the episode, I also kept wondering where the heck Hannah was (the female that brought Ted and Matt together - she can send/receive electronic signal stuff…). She didn’t even ‘raid’ the house with them.
