Recently I had to take a couple of online courses to fulfill work requirements and one of the courses was on defensive driving. One of the pages/slides (whatever) had an interesting piece of information though:
When has a police officer ever pulled anyone over for not signaling before a turn? Because, according to my course, it is illegal to make turns without signaling first. I must be missing something. I have NEVER heard of this before.
But there are some laws that have passed recently that some Californian’s (sorry other states/countries) may not be aware of.
Here’s are a couple that I do know about, however:
- If you are using your windshield wipers - you must have your headlights on.
- You can’t use your cell phone while driving unless it is a hands-free listening/speaking system (exception is if you are reporting an emergency).
- Drivers under the age of 18 are not allowed to be using any mobile device while driving (doesn’t take effect until July 2008 though).

In NY and NJ, this stuff is covered in driver’s ed, ad nauseum.
Duh, E…not signaling while making ANY turns has always been illegal–common knowlege if you’ve ever taken a DMV exam. But then again, you are a San Diegan and it’s also common knowledge that San Diegans can’t drive FOR SHIT! I can say that though, since I’m also from San Diego…
2. So why doesn’t anybody get a ticket for not signaling then? I’ve been in front of a police car plenty of times to make a right turn and never had my signal lights on (or in the left turning lane).
I talked to a buddy of mine who happens to be SDPD and he said the reason you’ve probably never been pulled over is that cops look at it as a minor offence. However, if your negligence was to cause an accident, you would definitely be cited.
